Develop Innovative Approaches to Assess, Predict, Improve Operator Performance
Caterpillar is seeking creative approaches to real time coaching and improvement of operator performance.

Caterpillar’s large mining trucks are used to haul 150 to 400 tons of material in one haul cycle. Information from the machines and operations are tracked by these mine sites and there is variation in this process either due to mine site layout, how the equipment is operated, the haul road conditions, or combination of these. Process variation results in unplanned downtime, equipment availability, component life, and general reliability of equipment. In a typical year CAT sees hundreds of thousands of events triggered across various sites on these machines that in some way or form correlate to operator-controlled inputs.
Customers use various tools such as simulators, operator coaching, classroom training etc. to address this challenge. However, due to high operator turnover rates and varying mine site conditions traditional training techniques have to be augmented with real time coaching in order to address the challenge in a proactive manner.
Potential Areas to consider:
- Utilizing available data, how might we use it in real-time to coach the operator to improve performance?
- How might we use existing data to compare operator performance in a manner that is engaging to them such that they want to receive this information in order to help them improve performance and so they could be recognized and rewarded for optimal productivity?
- Can we utilize data to predict future operator events?
