From Idea to Prototype on Resource Challenges in just a Weekend
This competition has finished.
Extract geoscientific information from scanned OCR and non-OCR historical exploration reports and visualise the data with spatial identifiers.
Large amount of useful information still resides in historical documents in hardcopy or restricted formats that require a manual process to scan the content, identify required data and build key datasets. Governments and private organizations spend a large amount of time and effort mining data from historical reports. An automated process to capture key data effectively, so it can be visualised clearly with a spatial identifier would be an important aid and would accelerate the process dramatically.
Potential areas to consider:
- OCR is a common way to scan and capture data from reports, but other initial scanning methods could be more useful
- Key information will be analytical and geoscientific data that has a range of. information associated with a single location (a drillhole). An effective way to visualise the data relationships would greatly empower the end output
