When drilling wells for natural gas production, there are three main factors that define the success of the operation: the total time spent drilling (and thus the cost), the quality of the well, and the safety of the operation. It is, therefore, desirable to be able to drill high quality wells as safely and time-effectively as possible. The objective of this challenge is to provide drilling personnel with real-time feedback on drilling performance and well quality. Furthermore, it would be advantageous to identify which controllable drilling parameters could be limiting drilling performance.
Drilling data is recorded, stored and monitored via the Pason system. Rig personnel are able to monitor the data on screens around the rig, while engineers can also access the live data stream online. This data, however, does not effectively communicate which drilling phases are problematic and which controllable drilling parameters could be limiting performance. The implementation of such a system could alert drilling personnel when drilling performance is inadequate, allowing for correction and overall performance improvement.
Technical limits are set by engineering teams based on the best result that has previously been achieved when drilling each well section. The technical limits, therefore, provide a benchmark for each well section, and can be used to assess the effectiveness of drilling operations. Improved alignment between drilling operations and the technical limits has the potential to reduce drilling costs by up to 20%, equating to approximately $70,000 per well.
Potential areas to consider:
- Can performance metrics be developed to assess the alignment of each well section with the technical limits? How can this be clearly communicated to drilling personnel in real-time?
- For well sections deviating significantly from the technical limit, can the controllable drilling parameters be compared to those used when the technical limit was set, in order to identify potential solutions?
- Can the performance metrics for drilling and well quality be incorporated into individual KPIs for drilling personnel?
- How can the durations of phases other than drilling phases also be reduced?
- What other methods exist to improve the drilling process?
