Improve blasting performance in high temperature conditions
This competition has finished.
digging out old products from the library to dig out new rocks / Taking out the explosive out of the bench
Current mining explosives contain water in their formulation. Pure water boils at 100ºC at 1 atm pressure, but when salts are added, such as nitrates, the boiling temperature increases (and of course the water content decreases). Due to the expected ground temperature at the Lihir mine (190ºC), any explosive composition to be used for blasting must have a boiling point above that temperature and as much nitrates / other salts as possible. That can be achieved by using combinations of nitrates (AN, CN, SN) and urea.
