The Nickle West Smelter (NWS) offgas train can suck through and process a maximum of 190,000 Nm3/hr of the smelting off gas stream. The air being pulled through the system leaves the furnace at 1300 °C and naturally cools as it traverses the system, though excessive cooling can drop the SO2 gas to below its dew-point, which condenses and corrodes the ducting system. Ducting corrosion allows holes to form, and the ingress of cool atmospheric air, which cools the process stream further and accelerates SO2 condensation, further corrosion and subsequent hole formation.
