Launched500: What we learned from profiling 500 mining technology companies

Two years of weekly profiles.

When we started Launched, the idea was simple: feature 5 mining technology companies every week that the industry should know about. Early-stage capability, low visibility, future impact. Some were two people in a workshop. Others had just closed their first funding round.

Five hundred profiles later, the dataset tells us some interesting things about where mining innovation is actually happening — and where it isn't.

Where the 500 companies work

Mapped against the mining value chain:

  • Processing, refining and metallurgy — 116 companies (23%). The single biggest category, driven by critical minerals, resource efficiency and recovering more value from existing operations.
  • Exploration and resource definition — 88 companies (18%).
  • Mining operations and material movement — 68 companies (14%).
  • Tailings, waste, water and closure — 63 companies (13%).
Mining Value Chain

So more than half of all mining innovation we found is concentrated in just three areas: processing, exploration and operations.

AI is a layer, not a category

Only 54 companies (11%) sit purely in software and data infrastructure. But when we tagged capabilities rather than categories, AI, software and data appeared in 138 companies — over a quarter of everything we featured.

AI in mining isn't a vertical anymore; it shows up inside exploration tools, processing optimisation, tailings monitoring, fleet autonomy, almost every part of the value chain. The companies building "AI for mining" as a standalone pitch are now the minority and most likely are not on a winner.

Capability Themes

The gaps are just as interesting

Some parts of the value chain barely showed up:

  • Supply chain, traceability and markets — 6 companies.
  • Mine planning, survey and geospatial — 10 companies.
  • Safety, risk and workforce — 22 companies.

Three areas where the industry consistently says it wants better solutions, and where we found less people building. Whether that's a signal of low startup opportunity or an open field for founders, we'll let you judge.

Where the companies come from

  • USA — 136 companies (27%)
  • Australia — 103 (21%)
  • Canada — 54
  • UK — 52
  • Then Germany (19), Sweden (17), Chile (15), France (13) and Finland (9)
Top Countries

The number that stands out: Australia produced 103 companies from a population of 27 million. That's roughly one featured company per 260,000 people — about nine times the rate of the USA. On a per-capita basis, Australia is the most productive mining innovation ecosystem we've seen, by a wide margin.

North America accounted for almost 40% of companies, Europe almost 30%, Australia 21%. Mining innovation is genuinely distributed which is exactly why connecting miners with innovators globally matters.

What happened after we featured them

We don't claim any credit; great companies succeed because they build great technology and execute well. But since being featured, companies from Launched have:

  • Raised major rounds: Field AI (US$314M), Cyclic Materials (US$75M Series C), Genomines (US$45M Series A), Nexxa.ai (US$9M Seed)
  • Secured significant government funding: ElementUSA (US$67M DOE award), UP Catalyst (€18M European Investment Bank financing)
  • Announced strategic partnerships with Aquatech, ABS, Weir, ARES Strategic Mining and others
  • Scaled from early-stage startups to commercial deployments around the world

In several cases we introduced these companies to our audience before those milestones happened. That's the part we enjoy most, being early in the journey and understanding of the potential.

Three recent companies that perfectly capture what Launched is all about are:

  • Magrathea Metals — producing magnesium metal from seawater using an electrochemical process, replacing conventional carbon-intensive production routes. Read more here.

The next 500

Five hundred companies in, the clearest lesson is how much is being built outside the industry's normal field of view. Every week we find founders working on technology that deserves more attention than it gets.
