Unearthed Brisbane 2016 - Capstone Project Solution

Young Innovator Award Team Member Tylor Stewart

Background

Tylor is currently the Vice President of Code Network; a group of talented up and coming developers who regularly attend hackathon events. He is also completing a degree in computer science at Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

Tylor’s team Best Code Network took out the Young Innovators Award at the Unearthed Brisbane Hackathon event in March this year. They presented a solution to BHP Billiton’s challenge related to improving the process of tracking and handling drill samples. The Wi-Fi enabled location and atmospheric trackers help labs to better estimate the quality of coal seams.

Prototype

The process of tracking and handling drill samples is improved, by measuring the:

  • Location
  • Heat
  • Humidity

and then sending the data of each individual sample from geologist to analyst to lab via Wi-Fi enabled trackers.

Progress

Since winning the event in March, Tylor has continued development of his team’s solution as part of a Capstone Unit and has received further funding support from QUT.

He managed to track down a supervisor – Alan Woodley, who has had experience in resource sector research and development.

Tylor is also in continued discussions with Unearthed and industry partners such as BHP Billiton.

What's Next?

At present, Tylor is focused on completing his Capstone Unit and Computer Science Degree.

He is seriously considering applying for the Unearthed Accelerator Program after completing his capstone unit in 6 months’ time.

We wish Tylor all the very best in his studies and more specifically in the continued development of the location and atmospheric tracking devices.
